The Fab Five

October 27th, 2011 by Brittany Martin

The World Wide Web is the number one source for information today. I go to the internet on a daily basis to get my news updates, stock market forecasts, communicate with clients, and shop online. Businesses are judged everyday based on the quality of their website. How many times have you gone to a website and developed a pre-conceived notion of the business based on your experience? There are 5 things that you should know about your business’ website. I call them the 5 W’s:

  • Who is coming to your site? Identify your target market. Chances are you did research before developing your website to see who your target market, but at best this was an educated guess. Track your website and confirm you are getting the right people to your website, or accommodate for a target market you didn’t focus on before.
  • What are they looking for? With a click trail included in all web sessions you can see what are person is looking for on your website. Find out what products/vehicles/clothes are looked at most and adjust your inventory based on the results.
  • When are we losing our potential leads? Find out where your potential customers are leaving the website and adjust your landing pages and/or page layouts based on what you observe. It is also important to know that what looks like a lost lead might actually be the point where the customer picked up the phone and called, so tracking those calls and tying them in with the web session is crucial.
  • Where are we converting potential leads to legitimate leads? Tag certain pages as conversion pages to show you 1) where all of your conversions occur and 2) which conversion pages are working better than others. You can make the successful pages landing pages or just make them easier to access on your site.
  • Why are they coming to our site? Chances are you have marketing efforts online that are aimed at directing more people to your website. Find out if they are working properly. Our reporting services show what source your customers are coming from, including all search engines and Google Adwords!

Having a web presence in general is a must for any business, but finding out these 5 W’s will help determine if your website is giving you a good reputation online! It doesn’t stop at the initial evaluation of a website either. Target markets will change, new technologies will eclipse the old and the web will continually change like it always does. Keep an eye on these five indicators to make sure you are keeping up with the times and continually improving!
